Two-game suspension isn't enough for Griner

Baylor didn't do itself any favors Thursday by announcing a two-game suspension for 6-foot-8 women's basketball sensation Brittney Griner, who punched Texas Tech's Jordan Barncastle.

The NCAA requires a one-game suspension for the foul, leaving the school a lot of leeway for additional punishment. A shove may have been worth an additional game, or maybe verbally harassing an official or opposing player.

But cold-cocking Barncastle and breaking her nose should have led to a much steeper penalty.

This is bad for Baylor's public image. There's not much more Griner can do to repair hers, but Baylor could have made it look like they didn't condone the behavior by sitting her down for the season.

Trouble is, it's March. And Griner can dunk like an NBA player. And if Baylor wants a shot at a Final Four bid, Griner will have to get the Lady Bears there.

But all this is transparent, which is why the New York Times, Inside Edition and many other news outlets are there trying to hammer Baylor and Griner in the media and press.

Baylor has forever lost the right to say it doesn't favor its sports stars.
