Snowmageddon's (soccer) fallout

The snow that hit the Texas Panhandle the last two weeks caused a small scheduling dent in the basketball schedule.

But for the outdoor sport of soccer, things have gotten a little more complicated.

The schedule kept shifting and sliding around like my back tires on Coulter. But things finally seem to be evening out.

The Palo Duro teams had the right idea, beginning their District 5-4A schedule on Monday rather than Tuesday. They were able to get their openers in, while all others have had to keep pushing their matches back.

The undefeated Caprock Boys are finally going to get their district season started today against the two-time defending district champion Dons, while the rest of the district looks good-to-go for tomorrow's matches.

But that leaves all the postponed matches to be played. I have a feeling many will happen Monday, but with more rain coming, who knows.

District 2-5A has been able to make up their matches more easily, as Tascosa's contests with Midland Lee at Dick Bivins Stadium will be the last catch-up matches -- unless bad weather forced Tuesday's 2-5A events to be postponed.

Either way, the area's soccer standings won't look even or correct for a while. But, hopefully by Spring Break they will.

Of course, I've been up here twice during SB and seen snow, so who knows.

Amarillo High girls soccer is impressive

I'm new to the area's soccer scene, but I got to know the soccer in the Dallas-Fort Worth area during my last gig at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

So I'm here to tell you that the Amarillo High girls soccer team has a legitimate shot at advancing past the Region I semifinals -- the postseason round in which its been stuck the past two seasons.

The Lady Sandies recorded their eighth straight shutout Monday against San Angelo Central, and seem at this point to be a lock for the District 2-5A District title.

Coach Stacey McPherson may not want me to say this (sorry coach), but I'm already looking to the playoffs to see how far they can go.

The thing AHS needs to do better is capitalize on their scoring opportunities. The Lady Sandies (8-1, 6-0 in district) take a lot of shots, but haven't been that good at putting many of them in the back of the net.

McPherson is all-too aware of this. But if AHS' defense, led by goalkeeper Devan Glover -- who is expected to sign with Oklahoma on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the Amarillo High School commons -- can stay as perfect as they've been this season, it won't matter much if they go 2-for-20 in shooting.
